STEM is important to us, as it never fails to affect every part of our lives, with science and technology perpetually developing and Engineering faces the environmental and innovative challenges, while Mathematics aids in every aspect of our lives. STEM is not just for aspiring scientists, engineers, and mathematics as there are countless specializations with many options in the relevant field for passionate students. STEM brings with it a set of skills and knowledge, that can encourage students to think critically, analyze and explore new horizons where the society will benefit with new inventions of environmentally friendly technology, improved infrastructure and new medical discoveries with many more possibilities. Thus, that explains that STEM not only allows career advancement but also one can get a comprehensive idea on today’s changing world from weather to technology and electricity to even politics.
Studying STEM will enable students to tackle real-world challenges while taking an active role in the country’s discoveries while creating sustainable change. This will be a great opportunity for students as they can use the knowledge gathered from the extensive knowledge gained from STEM subjects, with the world evolving at a rapid rate and young people with the STEM knowledge are the future visionaries who can compete on a global scale.
According to the statistics, there are more than a million job vacancies in the STEM industry; these industries are facing a lack of qualified employees who will fulfill the roles of the current employees once they move on and get older.

Although STEM is known to be critically important to the economy, not enough young people are encouraged to pursue careers in such sectors. According to a research conducted by the Oder Academy blog, there are currently more than a million job vacancies in the STEM industry while at the same time only 16% of college students graduate in STEM fields of subjects.
As technology is evolving and moving forward, it is paramount that young people are motivated to study STEM considering its importance to the country, the world, and its economy; it is imperative that students develop such skills to compete on a global scale. Nowadays, students can study a certificate, diploma, and degree after exploring their myriad options or the students can start by exploring the basics before selecting a major, during the latter stage of the degree. In addition, there are various scholarships targeting students entering these fields, which is worth considering.
STEM education is arguably paramount in making people innovative and productive in all their endeavors ; it is a part of everyday life and obviously the world wouldn’t be as developed as today, if it wasn’t for STEM but with the latest and highly sophisticated advancements in the world with breakthrough jobs in the market, are the Sri Lankan students fully prepared for the era of change?
